Legal Practice
Attorney Jake Megowen provides comprehensive representation to individuals with legal problems involving:
- Criminal charges in District Court. Attorney Megowen handles all misdemeanors and felonies in District Court, including drug and alcohol impaired driving (OUI/DUI/DWI), drug charges, assault and battery, domestic violence, violation of restraining orders and of anti-harassment orders, disorderly conduct, larceny, vandalism, shoplifting and other property crimes. He argues for clients at arraignment, bail revocation and dangerousness hearings. He also handles motor vehicle offenses, including speeding tickets and reckless driving, operating after suspension, uninsured operation, leaving the scene of an accident, use without authority, and child endangerment charges.
- Juvenile delinquency. Attorney Megowen works with both minors and their parents or guardians to handle all aspects of juvenile delinquency proceedings. He seeks to avoid detention or DYS custody. He can usually resolve juvenile matters without a trial and help resolve probation compliance and restitution issues.
- Probation violations. Attorney Megowen represents individuals who are charged with probation violations, advocating at each hearing from arraignment/detention to final surrender and resentencing. He can show you how to work effectively with your probation department to avoid the revocation of probation and/or imposition of a sentence.
- Family conflicts and marital dissolution. Attorney Megowen ensures you get a fair resolution when facing legal matters surrounding disagreements involving divorce and property division, child custody, visitation, removal, modifications, and enforcement of alimony and child support.
- Mental health issues. In Probate Court, Attorney Megowen protects your right to decide where you live and what medications you take, if you are living with a mental illness like depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia. He also has experience with clients with post-traumatic stress, attachment, and personality disorders. He advocates for clients at civil commitments in district court and against clients being forced to take antipsychotic medications at Rogers hearings. He represents individuals, who are accused of crimes that are a result of mental illness, working with them to prevent the criminalization of conduct caused by mental illness. He also can advocate for clients who seek a family member's civil commitment for treatment of their mental illness or drug and alcohol addiction. He can help you obtain a guardianship and/or conservatorship for a family member or loved one.
